Static IP for Business: What It Is and Why Your Office Needs One

By navnit8332@gmail.com • Published on Sep 12, 2026 • 3 min read

If your office runs a VPN, a hosted phone system, remotely-viewed CCTV, or any server your team needs to reach from outside the building, there’s a good chance you’ve already run into the problem a static IP solves — even if nobody called it that at the time. It usually shows up as “the VPN keeps disconnecting,” “we can’t see the cameras from home,” or “IT has to reconfigure the firewall every few days.”

What a Static IP Actually Is

A static IP address is a public IP address permanently assigned to your connection — it doesn’t change. A dynamic IP, by contrast, can change periodically (when your router reconnects, or on the provider’s own schedule), and a CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) connection goes a step further: it shares one public IP across many different customers simultaneously, meaning you don’t have a dedicated public address at all.

Why This Matters in Practice

Use case Dynamic IP CGNAT Static IP
Site-to-site VPN Breaks when the IP changes Often not possible at all Stable, works as configured
Remote CCTV/NVR access Reconfiguration needed after each change Typically not reachable from outside Reliable remote access
Hosted PBX / VoIP Call quality/registration issues Frequent registration failures Stable registration
Firewall IP whitelisting Rules break when IP changes Not usable for whitelisting Set once, works reliably
Hosting a local server Unreliable, needs dynamic DNS workaround Generally not possible Directly reachable

Common Situations That Actually Need One

  • Site-to-site or remote-access VPNs connecting branch offices or remote staff to head office systems
  • CCTV/NVR systems that need to be viewable remotely by management or a security team
  • Hosted PBX or SIP trunking for office phone systems
  • ERP, accounting, or database servers hosted on-premises but accessed remotely
  • Payment terminals or POS systems that require IP whitelisting with a bank or payment gateway

If your business does any of the above and connectivity has felt unreliable in ways that don’t match your bandwidth, a shared/dynamic IP — or worse, CGNAT — is a common, overlooked cause. We’ve written a deeper technical breakdown of the CGNAT problem specifically in Static Public IPs vs. CGNAT for Corporate Networks.

How to Check What You Currently Have

The simplest check: search “what is my IP” from a computer on your office network, note the address, then check again a day or two later without restarting your router. If it’s changed, you’re on a dynamic IP. If your IT team has tried to set up remote access and consistently run into problems that don’t resolve with normal troubleshooting, CGNAT is worth suspecting — your ISP can confirm directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every business connection need a static IP?

No — if your office only browses the web, uses cloud SaaS tools, and doesn’t host anything or need remote access to internal systems, a dynamic IP is often fine. It becomes necessary once you need something external to reliably reach something inside your network.

Is a static IP included with business broadband, or extra?

It varies by provider and tier. On Navneet’s Corporate Broadband plans a static public IPv4 is available; on our Internet Leased Line tier, a dedicated static IP subnet is included as standard.

Can we add a static IP to an existing connection without switching providers?

In many cases yes, depending on your current provider and plan — it’s worth asking directly, since it’s often a smaller change than a full connection upgrade.

If you’re not sure whether your current setup includes a static IP, get in touch and we can help you check, or see our Corporate Broadband and Internet Leased Line pages for what’s included on each tier.
